It's early February 2024 and time for an update. We spent all of the rest of January out in the Florida Keys, at two RV parks along Highway 1 which they call the Overseas Highway. The road out there is almost all really good road with huge shoulders, so we could ride our scooters almost anywhere. The first two weeks we stayed at Sunshine Key, which is just south of Marathon, after crossing the 7 mile bridge. Please see some of the pictures I took out there and one long video of riding over the 7 mile bridge. It's a pretty incredible structure. One day I went all the way out to Key West, which was about a 50 mile trip one-way. That gets pretty long on a scooter! Didn't spend much time there, and still enjoyed the ride both ways. Things fairly worthy of attention… Just south of our spot at Sunshine Key is Bahia Honda State Park, which is a beautiful park right on the ocean. We scanned for shark's teeth a few times there but didn't find anything. See some of the pictures and videos I took out there. The blue green water is really indicative of the area. The water must be really shallow, because you can see what appears to be reefs everywhere just under the surface of the water. Our overall impression of Sunshine Key wasn't the greatest… The spots are really crammed together, and the roads are extremely narrow. When we were leaving on the 15th of January, we had to jockey back-and-forth at least four times to get enough space to even get in the road to depart. And we got four or five complaints about our dogs barking, so that really ticked us off. We were extremely happy to leave! Gloria felt pretty crappy most of the time we were there, and would finally test positive for Covid about the time we arrived at our next stop which was Fiesta Key about 30 miles further north, or backing out of the keys (the drive out Overseas Highway is essentially East-West, but the directions on the road are labelled North-South). We would stay there until January 31, and Siesta Key is a really nice part. Nice dog park, wide roads, and huge slips to park in, probably 80 to 100 feet long. Fairly uneventful stay, except for having to get back into Marathon to get to a walk-in clinic because of Gloria's Covid status. I guess they don't do Paxlovid anymore, but she got a steroid and an anabiotic prescription that seemed to pull her through OK. We sequestered for five days, and then wore masks if we went out. Got to know the surrounding area on the scooters pretty well, met lots of dogs and humans at the dog park as we visited probably at least twice a day. And not one dog complaint from this park! Days were leisurely, and several afternoons we spent around a beautiful saltwater pool that had plenty of lounge chairs for everyone. We didn't fail to find a lounge chair on any visit! Please see some pictures I took at the pool too. This park is so nice that it has its own restaurant, and full service bar that is really near the pool and hot tubs. Yes, two hot tubs! Karaoke is every Monday night so of course we partook of that as well. We left on January 31st, a Wednesday, for a 5-day stay just outside of Orlando, preparing for our trip up to Panama City Beach up in the panhandle of Florida, just East of Pensacola and still on the Gulf of Mexico, for the balance of February. |
